Arogyavaram Medical Centre was founded by Christian Missionaries from Europe during the Year 1912. The pioneers selected 350 acres of forest land in Madanapalle Town in Chittoor District of Andhra Pradesh and named the place as "Arogyavaram" meaning "Health, the Gift of God". The land was then developed in to extremely elegant & well equipped Hospital buildings by which were exclusively for treating Tuberculosis (TB) patients in an era where treatment for a condition like Tuberculosis was not viable. This Medical Centre was the first Sanatorium in South India for treating Tuberculosis (TB) patients and was formerly known as Union Mission Tuberculosis Sanatorium.
The 350 bedded Hospital building was inaugurated in the year 1915 by then the Governor of Madras, Lord Pentland and Dr. Christian Frimodt Moller lead the Hospital along with other European Doctors and Health Care Professionals.
With the heritage and legacy the Hospital carried throughout the years have made this place as the Central Training centres in India for training Doctors and other Health Care Professionals for of the most vulnerable conditions like HIV/AIDS.
In 1947 the Madanapalle Tuberculosis Campaign – a Special Scheme for controlling Tuberculosis in a given area was started as a field work of Sanatorium. The Government of India accepted the WHO offer of a team to organize a B.C.G Programme and chosen Madanapalle as the place to start. It was inaugurated by the then Union Health Minister, the Hon. Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. The Sanatorium was then asked by the Indian Council of Medical Research to be responsible for one of the six areas chosen for the National Tuberculosis survey of India. In 1948-49 a revolutionary treatment for Tuberculosis started and drugs like Streptomycin, INAH and PAS were experimented here before they were put into market in this Country.
From the beginning this Institution was actively involved in the treatment and Research in the field of Tuberculosis. The trial studies of Streptomycin , Rifampacin, etc. BCG vaccination trial studies were conducted here. The first Laboratory training program in India was started here. The first Lung surgery (Thoracoplasty) was performed in this Institution. Trophical Eosinophilia was demonstrated in our Laboratory for the first time. We are also actively involved in Research in partnership with St. John’s Research Institute and Cornell University for the past 7 years.
As a mission to advance the health of the community by focusing on community medicine, the Hospital and its Management realized the need for preparing Christian Nursing professionals to provide holistic health of people. This lead a way to establish school of nursing in the year 1999 which has became a comprehensive institution that offers a superior standard system in Nursing Education.
